I wish I had access to this informative post before I took the UPCAT.

U.P. UPG Cut-Off Scores and Reconsideration

Sometimes, your best laid plans to study at the University of the Philippines can go awry.  Fortunately, there’s always a possibility of asking the school authorities to reconsider your case, or applying at a sister campus other than your original choice.

There are some things you should know about the UPCAT UPG cut-off figures, though.  Before you apply for reconsideration or apply at another U.P. branch, kindly consider the following.

How it Works

Simply put, different U.P. campuses have different UPG cut-off scores for both the UPCAT itself and any appeals for reconsideration. (i.e., students who don’t make the cut-off for their original U.P. branch of choice can try applying at an alternative branch whose cut-off they do meet.).

The values can go higher or lower depending on which campus you visit.  Pending cases and cases of “degree course with available slot” may also take advantage of this option.  The only exception is the Diliman branch, which doesn’t entertain reconsideration requests at all.

Do note that even after you file an appeal for reconsideration, acceptance at these sister institutions isn’t guaranteed.  Factors such as slot availability, high school marks, your socio-economic status and other things on the school authorities’ priority list can effectively make or break an application.

UP Cut Off Grades or Scores

The cut-off UPG scores for the U.P. sister campuses are listed below.  The number on the left refers to the UPCAT cut-off standard, while the number on the right refers to the cut-off for reconsideration appeals:

  • U.P. Diliman:  2.2 (only for the UPCAT; reconsideration is not applicable)
  • U.P. Manila:  2.285 – 2.5
  • U.P. Baguio:  2.659 – 2.574
  • U.P. Tacloban:  2.7 – 2.7
  • U.P. Cebu:  2.7 – 2.7
  • U.P. Iloilo:  2.7 – 2.7
  • U.P. Mindanao:  2.75 – 2.75
  • U.P. Los Banos:  2.42 – 2.8

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the U.P. numbering system, kindly note that the absolute values of the UPG numbers above are in inverse proportion to their perceived value.  In other words, the smaller the numbers are, the better they are in the U.P. system, and the more stringent they are as cut-off grade requirements.

Other Considerations

The U.P. system has also been known to adjust the cut-off values, sometimes on an annual basis.  The adjustment depends on a variety of factors such as:

  • the number of available slots in that campus
  • the number of students who have selected that branch as their first priority
  • the relative average of the batch of test takers for that particular year.

Thus, a low number of passers might lead school authorities to lower a campus’ cut-off score, sometimes at a moment’s notice.  It’s best, therefore to regularly check with the U.P. campus you’re interested in for updates.

There’s another factor at play here.  U.P. draws 70% of incoming freshmen from the top ranking UPCAT takers.  It draws the remaining 30% from students coming from public high schools and minority groups.  That means if you have close to a hundred thousand applicants taking the test every year, only a fraction of that (the word going around estimates it 10% of that, or around a thousand) will be selected.

The lesson is this:  the UPG may be a major factor in determining the success of your application, but it is by no means the only one.  If you meet the UPG requirements and you still don’t get into the campus of your choice, trust that God will open other doors for you.

Note (April 13, 2011):

Please note that we cannot and will continue to refrain from giving definite answers when asked to speculate on a student’s chances of getting reconsidered to a UP campus.

University cut-off scores continually change, but we can base our recommendations only on the UPG cut-off scores already stated in this post. Please always keep this in mind whenever you ask us a question about UP  reconsideration.

For reconsideration hopefuls, the best advice we can give you is to immediately call the office of the registrar of whichever UP campus you wish to be reconsidered in –  first, to get things moving sooner rather than later (when it might be too late) and second, to get the clearest picture of your reconsideration chances.

We wish you all the best of luck!! :)

  1. Ask ko lang po kung pwede po bang magpareconsider sa Los Baños kahit hindi ko po iyun inindicate sa application form? I’ve read around the Internet na di raw sila tumatanggap. . . My UPG is 2.382 and I really want to go and study there. Pumunta na rin po ako sa UP Manila, BA OrgCom ang primary choice ko, mataas po ba yung chance na matanggap ako? May criteria rin po ba sila tulad ng LB? My scores in Language and Reading are 91 and 65, respectively. :)

    • Hi TAJ,

Based on past years’ absolute reconsideration cut-off UPG for UP Manila, you may be able to qualify for this campus. I can’t say about your course choice, though, because colleges don’t normally make such specific information public. Even so, you should try to call the college offering your preferred course; they may actually tell you to help you plan accordingly.

As for UPLB, it is indeed this campus’ stated policy that they will reconsider only those who put down UPLB as a campus choice in their applications. Even so, I urge you to call UPLB. According to the rumor mill, a lot of UPLB qualifiers are backing out so this might give you a better chance of getting accommodated to that campus.

Whatever you decide to do and whatever happens from here on out, good luck! ^_^

  2. Hi! :)
How are my chances for reconsideration for UP Manila if my upg is 2.379?

    UPG:
    English…91
    Reading comprehension…87
    Math…75
    Science…72

    • Hi Alexandra,

I’d say you have a good chance of being reconsidered – but again – everything hinges on your reconsideration course choices and their respective cut-offs and subtest score cut-offs. Good luck! :)

  3. Good evening!
    Itatanong ko lang po:
Ano po ung mas pinaprioritize ng UP sa reconsideration: UPG or ung interview? Sa March 16 na po kasi ung interview ko for Development Communication sa UPLB, and my UPG is 2.486. Mataas rin ho ba ung passing rate ko if my scores are 94-82-58-82 at ung required sa Devcomm ay 80-80-50-50?
Please reply. I really need your help.
    Thanks!

    • I also chose UPLB as a campus of my choice. I don’t know if I can benefit from that, pero pag may info po kayo tungkol doon, I’ll be happy to know :) ))
      Thank you!

    • Hi Nicole,

All of those things: UPG, subtest scores and your interview performance will matter. The weight of each will depend on the department-in-charge’s internal policies or even the department administrator’s preferences. Based on your scores, all I can say for certain is that you’re qualified and have a good chance of being reconsidered. You must understand, however, that you are competing with other students for limited slots. It will all come down to who has the better UPG, the better subtest scores and (if it matters) the better interview performance.

      Whatever happens, good luck! :)

  4. Hello. I got a 2.45 as my University Predicted Grade. However, I applied to a quota courses. Sad to say, I wasn’t accepted. According to this post, I am still eligible for reconsideration. Would it be possible to ask for reconsideration for the campus but ask to be put in a different course?

  5. Hi good day Sir, I would like to know if there is a chance to apply for reconsideration in UP Manila . My Upcat result is 2.4 and it’s my dream since I was a small kid to study in UP Manila
    My UPCAT scores
    Language-94
    Reading 89
    Math 80
    Science 89
    UP Predicted Grades 2.404

    • Hi Jane,

You have a chance based on your UPG and subtest scores. As I told one student, however, it all boils down to who amongst all reconsideration applicants applying for a slot in the same course has the better UPG and the better subtest scores. Good luck!

  6. hindi ko pa natatanggap ung letter o ung mail.. FEB 17, 2012

    • Hi Mark,

It might still be on its way. Just to be safe, though, please call UP Office of Admissions to follow up on your letter. You should also ask your school; UP could have sent the letters meant for you and your classmates to your school address.

  10. are freshmen who qualified for reconsideration have chances of still transferring to another campus? and do they survive the first semester or a lot fail? whats the percentage?

  11. hello my UPG is 2.656 and already went to UPLB, already chose a course which is BS agricultural Biotechnology which suits my scores from the different areas. i was wondering if my chance of getting into the university would be high, and i also chose UPLB as my second choice of campus during the enlistment

  12. Hi.. my daughter didn’t pass the UPCAT but her UPG is 2.477. Her choices were UP Diliman and UP Manila and all of her chosen courses were quota courses(unfortunately). Luckily, she passed the DOST-SEI scholarship exam. We inquired in the Scholarship section of DOST and they said that DOST passers can be admitted to UP Diliman even though they didn’t pass it. The DOST will just give her an endorsement letter but we are the ones who will submit it to UP personally. And we plan to try to seek for admission.. Any advices?

    • Hi! Hmmm… this is truly the first time we heard about this. But if DOST told you to do it, then I guess there’s no harm in following DOST’s instructions. We wish you the best of luck! If you can, please update us on what happens next. This could be helpful to other UP aspirants in the future. Thank you.

    • Hi! Unfortunately, UP Diliman does not entertain reconsideration requests. UP Baguio does, but you must make their cut-off score. Please call UP Baguio to inquire directly. You’ll then be asked about your UPG; that’s when they will tell you if they can entertain your appeal for reconsideration – in which case they’ll ask you to fax a copy of your UPCAT non-qualifier letter so the university can see if you can be placed in a program.

  13. my upg is 2.967 pwede pa ba to sa upd o upm??bagsak ako sa upcat…hirap kasi maging bobo e..hirap maging bobo kasi wala kang karapatang mag-aral sa kahit anung public colleges or university.

    • Kung 2.8 pa rin ang UPG cut-off score, then yes, you have a fighting chance. Your successful reconsideration will then depend on the course you choose for reconsideration – less in-demand courses means greater chance of getting accepted.

  15. I already received the mail from UP with my cut-off score : 2.543 .
I did not pass the UPCAT.My first choice was UP DILIMAN and UP MANILA.

What should I do? Can I apply to UP Manila for reconsideration ?Or should I go to UP BAGUIO?Thanks :)

    • We’ll leave the actual decision to you. We can only say that if UPG is the only criterion for reconsideration and if the above UPG cut-off scores still apply, then you have a better chance of qualifying for UP Baguio. You should ask UP Baguio and UP Manila about their current UPG cut-off scores (call the Registrar for each campus). While you’re at it, also inquire about the campus’ specific reconsideration procedures.

      • Thank you for your reply Admin.

I tried to contact the Registrar of UP Manila many times through email and their telephone number but they could not be reached.
I did the same thing with UP Baguio and they said I should email my non qualifier’s notice with my preferred program and contact number/s so that they can include me in the WAITLISTED II category as DPWS
        (Degree Program With available Slot).

Said it’s a first come first-served basis. Do you think they will really reconsider me?

        God Bless.

        • Hi, UP Baguio will really try to accommodate you if you make their UPG cut-off. However, there’s no guarantee since the outcome will still depend on the demand for slots. If you want to try for UP Baguio, you should move quickly.

          • I already sent what they had been asking for. I sent it:March 29th but until now,no response from them.

  16. .i’ve already filed my application for reconsideration in UPLB. I would like to ask if i have a great chance of passing considering that my upcat scores were as follows:
    Language…79
    Reading….98
    Sci………..82
    Math………67
    UPG:2. 554
My chosen courses were Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and BS Nutrition

    • According to UPLB’s wait list criteria for the First Semester of AY 2011-2012 (found at http://www.uplb.edu.ph/index.php/students-and-alumni/386-2011-2012-uplb-wait-list-criteria), the requirement for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine are a grade of 60 for Reading Comprehension and a grade of 60 for Science, while the requirement for BS Nutrition is a UPG of 2.75 or better. In both courses, an interview is also a requirement so you should ace that interview.

You apparently satisfy the grade/UPG requirements of both your choices, so you should have a good chance provided you do well in the interview and as long as your grades/UPG and interview performance put you above enough of your competitors to get accepted (note: the competition for slots in your chosen courses will affect the outcome of your reconsideration application).

We wish you the best of luck!

  17. .i already filed my application for reconsideration in UPLB. I would like to ask if i have a great chance of passing considering that my upcat scores were as follows:

  18. hi I was wondering what is the success percentage of reconsideration in UPLB? given that you meet their requirements

    UPG of 2.8 or better
    chose UPLB as their campus

  19. tanong ko lang po kung mga ilang percentage po ba ang estimated nyo sa success ng reconsideration sa UPLB? lalo na kung na-meet mo ung requirements nila which are:

    UPG of 2.8 or better
choosing UPLB campus on the application form
    etc.

    help naman po

  20. what if my upg is 2.431 and my first choice of campus is Diliman and I’ll write LB as my second (I’ve read na choosing a campus with a lower upg requirement, mas makakapasok daw???), and my desired course would be fine arts then psychology, will UPD let me study there if I obtain a high mark and pass the upcat :( ????

    • Hi Andy! If your UPG is 2.431 and your first choice of campus is UPD and your second choice of campus is UPLB, you will probably be assigned to UPLB, not to UPD – assuming, of course, that the above-quoted UPG cut-off scores apply. Your UPG will determine your UP campus; if it’s high enough to qualify you for your first campus choice, then you’ll get accepted in that campus. If it’s not high enough for your first campus choice but high enough for your second choice of campus, then you’ll be accommodated in your second campus choice.

  21. 1.) my son got UPCAT Grade of 2.512… can he enroll at UPLB even he did not indicate UPLB as his college choice during his UPCAT Application? Since his UPG is qualified for UPLB…

2.) For UP Diliman UPG requirement that is 2.285 – 2.5, is UPG equivalent to 2.512 not considered?

    • UPLB expressly states that it prioritizes reconsideration applicants who have indicated UPLB as one of their choice campuses. Nevertheless, you can still try to apply for reconsideration. There’s no harm in trying.

I believe that the 2nd question refers to UP Manila (as far as we know UPD has no reconsideration procedures). Your son’s UPG is close enough to UP Manila’s UPG cut-off score, so you can try to apply for reconsideration in this campus. Just note, though, that the competition for UPM’s slots is rather steep.

  22. Good day. Just wanna confirm something…UPM accepts students with a UPG of greater than or equal to 2.5 while Baguio accepts students with a UPG of 2.659 – 2.574? What if the student’s UPG fell between 2.57-2.51? I’m assuming Baguio, but maybe there’s hope. Thanks. :) )

  23. *they said to us is that, I can enter UP Baguio and we should just wait and call after April 15.

*My Math and Science Percentile is higher than that of my English and Reading Comprehension. Or do they just check if your UPG is within their cut-off?

oops, I didn’t checked my grammar. Sorry.

  24. Hello! My UPG is 2.608 and I’m applying for BA Language and Literature in UP Baguio. I already sent my UPG to UP Baguio by fax and the only thing they said to us is that, I can enter UP Baguio and we should just wait and call after April 15. Why is that? Why after April 15?

Do I still have a chance to enter UP Baguio even though I didn’t wrote it on my UPCAT Application form? I only wrote UP Diliman. Sayang. Nagsisisi talaga ako. I regretted that I didn’t wrote UP Baguio, really. *sigh*

Does UP Baguio had an additional requirement like Interview and all that? Then, does UP Baguio checks your english proficiency and Reading Comprehension if your choice of course is related to Communication or anything related to Language? My Math and Science Percentile is higher than that of my English and Reading Comprehension. Or do they just check if your UPG is within their cut-off?

Anyways, thank you and God speed. ^_^

  26. Good day! My UPG is 2.589, will I be eligible for reconsideration in UP Manila or Baguio? We already contacted those in Baguio and they’re telling me to fax the mail that I received from UP. Is that all I need to do? Or there are still other requirements? Thanks. God bless

    • That is the first step, so do that first. You should also probably consider faxing (along with that UPCAT results mail) your “cover” letter – i.e. your application for reconsideration letter just to make sure the other party knows why you are faxing them your UPCAT results mail.

UP Baguio just wants to make sure you pass their UPG cut-off score requirement. If you do, they’ll tell you what you need to do next. Good luck! :)

        • From what I’ve been able to gather, there’s no set format for this letter. If you want to be sure, though, you should ask UP Baguio. Good luck! :)

          • Thank you so much! I’m still hoping I’ll be accepted and be able to study in UP. Thanks and GOD Bless =)

          • Good day! I already faxed the mail with my name and UPG. As well as my preferred programs and contact numbers. How am I supposed to know if I was included in the WAITLISTED category? Will I be informed?

          • Before you submit your application for reconsideration, please call the Registrar’s office of the campus in which you wish to apply for reconsideration to find out the name of the addressee in your application for reconsideration. You should also ask about the specific reconsideration application procedures and other documentary requirements.

Note: The campus might have a wait list application form ready (like UPLB), in which case, all you’ll need to do is fill out the form and pass other requirements.

  27. i was accepted in UP Diliman.

the thing is, i’ve been accepted in my second choice (Business Admin) but i really want to be in Business Admin. and Accountancy… can i go for a reconsideration with my course? help please. :)

    • You can try, if you want. Talk to the College of Business Administration about it. Otherwise, you can stay in your current program then just shift to your preferred course after a year.

  28. GOOD PM what if my daughters UPCG is 2.797 will she be illegible for reconsideration to U.P Baguio or UPLB? Thank you and God Bless.

    • Hi Ma’am,

First of all, please understand that the cut-off scores in this post might already be outdated. It would be best if you talk to the UP campus directly.

That being said and assuming that the cut-off scores in this post still apply today, a 2.797 UPG exceeds the UP Baguio cut-off but it does fall within the UP Los Banos cut-off score. Again, assuming that the cut-off scores in this post are still relevant today, then applying for reconsideration with UPLB is an option. Just remember, though, that UPLB has this policy that prioritizes reconsideration applicants who, in their UPCAT application forms, have indicated UPLB as one of their choice campuses.

Once again, it would be so much better to talk to UP Baguio and UP Los Banos directly about reconsideration matters. There really is no harm in trying. Good luck and may God bless you, too! :)

  29. pumunta ako sa uplosbanos this day… my upg is 2.879 and the recuired upg is 2.800 … hindi nila ko inentertain.. :(

can i be qualified to other up campuses if i have the upg of 2.879???
i want to take interior design or fine arts sana in up diliman .

in up manila is there courses that doesnt need to pass in the upcat exams??? my sister is from up kse.. hindi sya nkpsa sa up manila pero nkpag philippine arts sya dun.

can i be qualified in up pampanga… ?

    • :( We’re sorry to hear that.

For your first question, as you can see from the list of UPG cut-off scores, other UP campuses have even higher requirements. I’m afraid that 2.879 exceeds the cut-off requirement of all campuses in this list. Take heart, though. UPG cut-off scores change often; you should inquire with the campuses in which you’re interested to check what their current UPG cut-off is. Baka mas mababa na sa nakalista dito.

Moving on to your other question , you may enroll in any UP campus even if you’re not a UPCAT passer pero not in a Bachelor’s Degree program. Specifically, you don’t need to be an UPCAT passer to enroll in a certificate course. Hanap ka ng certificate course sa UP Manila na related sa gusto mong kurso. Then before you enroll, check if they have a bridge program that will let you extend your certificate program into a bachelor’s degree program at a later time.

Finally, according to one parent (Mr. Jojo), UP Pampanga’s current UPG cut-off score of 2.5. So I’m afraid your UPG also exceeds that cut-off.

Whatever you decide to do, we wish you the best of luck.

  30. Good evening! I just want to ask if there’s a reconsideration in UP Pampanga. I think their cut-off grade is 2.5, what if my grade exceeded from the cut-off and there are still available slots because the passers didn’t confirm for enrollment?

    • There’s a good chance that UP Pampanga reconsiders applicants; it seems only UP Diliman does not reconsider. However, from what we have been able to gather, UP campuses reconsider applicants only if they pass their UPG cut-off requirements. Thus, even if a campus has room for more students, it will still probably accept only students who pass their required UPG.

Nevertheless, we’d like it noted that this is just speculation on our part – even if it is based on anecdotes of past reconsideration applicants. If you want to be absolutely sure you’re not letting a reconsideration opportunity pass, it’d be best to contact UP Pampanga and submit an appeal for reconsideration. There really is no harm in trying.

      Good luck! :)

    • Hi James! If we use the UPG cut-off scores mentioned in the article, then 2.836 is over the UPLB cut-off. However, it was also mentioned in the article that UPG cut-off scores may (and usually do) change. If you want to know for sure, you should contact UPLB to inquire about that possibility. Good luck!

    • Hi Mico! We were discussing this a few days ago. From what I gleaned, campuses may be disinclined to accept reconsideration appeals from students who did not choose them as one of their campus choices. However, please note that this is anecdotal information. The only way you can be sure is to approach UPLB and submit an appeal for reconsideration. There’s really no harm in trying, and you might just get approved. We’re keeping our fingers crossed. Good luck! :)

    • It’s best to ask UP Manila directly. UP campuses are not required or obliged to address requests for reconsideration; it’s entirely up to campus administrators to decide if and when they will reconsider applicants. Campuses also often change their UPG cut-off scores.

      • hi I was wondering what is the success percentage of reconsideration in UPLB? given that you meet their requirements:

        UPG of 2.8 or better
        chosen UPLB as their campus

        pls help

        • Hi! I’m sorry but we don’t have that information. If you fit both general criteria above (the UPG requirement and the UPLB as a campus choice in your UPCAT application), the next thing that will matter is the course you choose. If you have a copy of your UPCAT grade breakdown, refer to the UPLB wait list criteria to find a specific course for which your grades qualify you (you’ll find this excel file at: http://www.uplb.edu.ph/index.php/students-and-alumni/386-2011-2012-uplb-wait-list-criteria). Doing this will help you choose a course wisely. You should also ace the interview – a requirement for reconsideration in all courses in UPLB. Good luck!
