PSHS (Philippine Science High School) Lateral Transfer Program Basics


In a perfect world, people do their best and reap the rewards for their hard work.  Unfortunately, things don’t always work that way.  There are times when you do your best, only to meet with disappointing results.

The good news for students is that they can get a second chance to study at their original school of choice—a lateral transfer, in other words.  Philippine Science High School (PSHS) is offering such an option with its recently established lateral entry program.

The Program Requirements

This option is open to (and only to) incoming sophomore secondary school students of any high school who have successfully passed their first year.  A brainchild of the Philippine government’s Department of Science of Technology (DOST), the PSHS lateral entry program was designed to fill vacant slots left by previous students.

There are conditions, though.  First of all, applicants must possess a minimum grade of 85% (or its equivalent) in all subjects and must belong to the top 5% of their class.  Secondly, they also need to pass the accreditation exam in major subjects (English, Mathematics and Science) with a minimum grade of 60% in each one.

Students need to have earned a character rating of VS (Very Satisfactory) or higher and must not be planning to immigrate to a foreign country at the time of their application.  The requirements for good moral character and good physical and mental health also apply.  Besides those, there’s also the paperwork that needs to be submitted, which brings me to the next section.

Necessary Paperwork

Overall, the screening process is quite similar to the one of incoming PSHS freshmen, with some minor changes to the requirements (mainly the student being in the top 5% of the class, instead of being in the top 10%).  Applicants must still turn in the customary paperwork and other stuff and take the aforementioned entrance test.

One important thing that potential scholars should do is to obtain written certification and endorsement from the guidance counselor or principal of their current school.  The standard issue 2 x 2 recent ID photos are also required, as is the photocopy of the applicants’ report card (They’ll also need to bring the original document with them for the sake of verification.).

Once gathered, applicants must submit everything with the application forms (accomplished in duplicate) to the PSHS Central Mindanao campus registrar and pay the non-refundable one hundred peso fee for processing purposes.  After that, it’s simply a matter of taking the exam and awaiting word of the results from the powers-that-be.

There are two catches that potential scholars need to be aware of at this point:  first, students who successfully pass the entire application process will be accepted at the PSHS Mindanao Campus; second, the applications for school year 2010-2011 closed last April 8, 2010.
