My mom was an alumna of Miriam College back when it was known as Maryknoll. She spoke of American nuns and mini-skirts and the exciting prospect of having an exclusive school for boys right next door. Needless to say, it an interesting time to be a colegiala
The management of Miriam may have changed since then, but its effort to deliver education hasn’t. Let’s take a closer look at how aspiring college students can apply.
Miriam College Introduction
The college started out in 1926 as the Malabon Normal School, a teacher-training institution run by the Sisters of Maryknoll Congregation in New York. In 1952, the school transferred to its current location in Quezon City, where it officially became Maryknoll College. The nuns passed the torch to local lay administrators in 1977, yet it wasn’t until 1989 that Maryknoll was renamed Miriam College.
These days, the learning institution boasts of an expanded curriculum and four major centers of community outreach, research and development. Foundations such as the Women and Gender Institute and the Institutional Network for Social Action reflect its roots’ emphasis on service and social responsibility..
Miriam College Admission Documents
The school will ask applicants for four basic documents:
- two recent 2 x 2 photos
- a completed secondary school record
- a completed adviser’s recommendation form
- a completed guidance recommendation form
Miriam College Application Process
Like its contemporaries, Miriam College encourages online applications. Start the process by going here to create an account and logging on with your account details here. Fill out the form and submit it. Keep the applicant number the system gives you for future reference.
Next, pay the 577-peso ($100 for foreign students or its peso equivalent) application fee. The school offers you a choice of paying in cash or credit directly at the college cashier’s office or at the bank. Kindly consult this webpage for more payment option details.
The system will send you an e-mail message verifying that your payment has been made (If payment was made directly at the school’s cashier’s office, the payee may obtain the permit from the admission’s office immediately afterward.). Print out the exam permit the online system offers you—your test day will be scheduled on the back—and stick a recent 2 x ID photo on it. Be sure to turn in the forms mentioned above by the time your exam date arrives. Ready your high school ID for the test and go for it! Note that you’ll receive a notification letter of your admission status through email.
The deadline for the February exam passed last January 17, 2011 but you can still file your application for the March exam if you send all the requirements in by February 15, 2011.
Miriam College Entrance Exam Schedule
The entrance test consists of morning and afternoon testing schedules. Examination normally starts at 8:00 am until 12 noon for the morning session and 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for the afternoon session. Testing dates are scheduled monthly from October to May.
The first entrance exam held this year for school year 2011-2012 took place last January 8, 2011. To date, there are two other test dates set for February 5 and March 5, 2011. The college is thinking of adding more testing dates for incoming freshmen this year, but the details have yet to be finalized as of the time of this article’s writing.
Miriam College Provincial Application/Testing Process
In case you’re wondering, there is no difference between the provincial and NCR application processes, given that Miriam College encourages students to tread the online application route. The only difference lies in the testing venue, which varies depending on which province you’ll be coming from.
Miriam College works closely with the Center for Educational Measurement, Inc. (CEM) to provide alternative testing centers for regional students. Please consult this webpage for more details. Unlike the NCR batch exams, there are no fixed dates for provincial exams—the arrangements are made after application.
Release of Miriam College Entrance Exam Results
The college usually releases test results around two to three weeks after the day of the exam. Results may be verified online or on the bulletin boards near the campus admissions office. You’ll also receive e-mail from the school about this.
General Miriam College Exam Coverage and Feedback
The college entrance test covers the standard high school subjects of English, Math and Science. Students who’ve taken the exam claim that it’s mostly about your stock knowledge—almost like the NCAE. It’s also reportedly more manageable than pressure cookers tests like those of the state university and Miriam’s next-door neighbor. Don’t rest on your laurels, though—the exam is only the beginning.
