Course Description:

No specific college course is required to become a cook. However, if you’re planning to apply for a job at a hotel, resort, or cruise ship, you need to at least have undergone some training course offered by vocational culinary school. These short courses teach you the basics in food preparation and cooking, including how to properly use kitchen appliances, devices, and machines. You will also be taught some background in food nutrition and safety.

Cost of Education:

Short courses will cost you about P1,200 for a half-day program; however, expect to pay more for a longer training program. For example, commercial cookery training program will cost you about P6,000.

Locally, there is a high demand for cooks in places that receive a high number of visitors or tourists yearly. Globally, Filipino cooks are also in demand in Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Brunei, and Oman.

Expected Salary:

A cook could earn about P9,000 to P15,000 each month, depending upon the employer and type of establishment. The salary is higher if you’re going to work for luxury hotels and resorts or international cruise ships.

Opportunities for Advancement:

There are a lot of career opportunities for cooks. From entry-level cook, you could advance to head cook and maybe even a specialist chef or a sous chef. From these positions, you could move up to a head chef of executive chef position.
