A high school graduate can become an entry level animator, provided you have artistic abilities, good imagination, and a basic knowledge of animation software. However, to become a Key Animator, you need to undergo training in graphic design as well as illustration and spatial design. Taking up a 2D and 3D design course, in addition to CAD or computer-aided design courses, will also be very valuable.

Cost of Education:

Depending upon the type of training program, the course fee could range anywhere from P7,000 for composting to P25,000 for 3D animation training. Other courses that you can take include P10,000 for flash for animation training and P15,000 for digital ink and paint, among others.

  • As an animator, your main responsibility is to “bring to life” drawings by creating the illusion of movement. You will also be tasked to create accurate and detailed storyboards, using medium such as clay, paint, water color, etc., to tell the story of the characters. It is also your responsibility to make sure that the movements of the characters are well-timed and paced to fit the audio requirements of the animation or its soundtrack.



Career Outlook and Global Demand


Global Demand:

Some of the countries that are offering competitive salaries for Filipino animators include the United States and the United Kingdom. Japan and Dubai are also eyeing the Philippines as a good source of skilled animators. Locally, the high demand for animators has sparked local animation companies to partner up with large foreign companies not only in the US, UK, and Japan but Australia as well, opening up thousands of animator positions in the country.

Expected Salary:

For entry level animator, salary ranges from P8,000 to P12,000 monthly, but if you advance to key animator, salary increases to P15,000 to P25,000. Overseas animation companies offer at least $5,000 to $5,500 monthly.

Opportunities for Advancement:

Two to three years’ experience as a key animator plus additional training and advanced courses can land you a key animator position. From this, you could move up to senior animator, animation supervisor, and even director of animation positions.
