Course Description:

There is no special course to become an aircraft mechanic, but taking up aviation-related courses such as Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Technology as well as Aircraft Technician course will give you a good advantage. It will also be to your advantage to have a background in aircraft maintenance and repair. To be an aircraft mechanic though, you need to be licensed by the Air Transportation Office.

Cost of Education:

Aviation-related courses range from P7,000 to P30,000 each semester. The cost per semester though depends upon the course and school.

Responsibilities:

  • As an aircraft mechanic, your main task is to examine and evaluate aircraft engines through testing equipment and devices as well as precision measuring tools, making sure that all engine components are fit and in good working condition. If there are adjustments, repairs, and replacements to be made, it is your duty to make sure that the aircraft meets the required specification standards.

 

 

Career Outlook and Global Demand

 

Global Demand:

There is a high demand right now for aircraft mechanics abroad. Countries that have intentions of hiring Filipino aircraft mechanics include Singapore as well as Saudi Arabia. Qatar is also looking into the country to hire aircraft mechanics. With qualified aircraft mechanics relocating abroad or retiring, there will be positions that needed to be filled locally.

Expected Salary:

The starting salary for a junior aircraft mechanic starts at about P20,000 monthly, but if you advance to a higher position, the salary increases to about P30,000 with good benefits such as rice subsidy, continuing education, holiday and special day pay, etc. Overseas though, you can earn as much as P50,000 to P70,000.

Opportunities for Advancement:

While the junior aircraft mechanic gives a good enough salary, advancing to Aircraft Mechanic A position offers more. If you want to advance your career, you need to undergo additional training and continuing education, which will take you about five or six years. From the aircraft mechanic A position, you could also advance to an aircraft inspector position, lead inspector, and even shop supervisor position.
