Scholarship Background

The STudent Assistantship and Resource Training Program 2 is the second phase of the START Program. It is an off-campus student employment program with DLSU partner companies which aims to provide currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who may need the additional source of funds to help meet their educational expenses. It also provides students with a range of practical experiences to acquire new skills in a supportive and safe environment. STARTers will only be deployed to companies with whom DLSU has signed an off-campus work agreement. Students will be working part-time with a partner company and shall receive compensation in the form of a monthly stipend. The program is being managed by the Office of Admissions and Scholarships (OAS).

Scholarship Benefits

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to participate in the START 2 Program:
1. Monthly stipend or allowances from the company which is at least equivalent to the hourly minimum wage for NCR (but not entitled to other fringe benefits, e.g. retirement plan, SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth)
2. Overtime/Holiday Pay
3. Other perks that may be provided by partner companies
4. Work rendered whenever such is allowed and consistent with the objectives of the respective programs, may be counted towards any or all requirements of a practicum, on-the-job training, or industry immersion
5. Advance enrolment privilege

Working conditions:
1. Minimum of four (4) hours to a maximum of six (6) hours on Mondays to Saturdays, and not to exceed 12 hours on Sundays and holidays but in no case to exceed 40 hours a week
2. Work rendered overtime or during holidays will be paid with corresponding overtime/holiday pay rate
3. Class and work schedules should not be in conflict
4. STARTers are not allowed to work during term breaks
5. STARTer’s contracts may be terminated by partner companies for a cause
6. STARTers shall observe proper work decorum as contained in the policies of the partner companies

Responsibilities of a Partner Company:
1. COMPANY shall provide DLSU of a brief description of the work to be performed by student employees, total number of students to be employed, total length of time of employment, hourly rate of pay, and other employment incentives and benefits.
2. COMPANY shall hire student employees for a fixed period, at the end of such period the contract of the student employee ceases without need of any verbal or written notice; however, the contract is renewable still, if appropriate in terms of exigencies of the service, upon agreement of the parties, and, if the student employee meets the established criteria.
3. COMPANY shall arrange for the work-shifts of the student employees to be for a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of six (6) hours on Mondays to Saturdays, and not to exceed 12 hours on Sundays and holidays but in no case to exceed 40 hours a week, based on a schedule that will not conflict the student employees’ class and work schedules.
4. COMPANY shall disburse compensation for work performed by student employees on a semi-monthly pay period; student employees who will be asked to work on overtime/holiday shall be paid with an overtime/holiday pay by the COMPANY.
5. COMPANY may provide student employees with other perks that are usually given to its regular employees.
6. COMPANY shall make available to DLSU the name and department of employment supervisors.
7. COMPANY shall permit DLSU, from time to time as it may request, to inspect the premises in which any student is working, the working conditions and job requirements of the student employees.

Scholarship Qualifications

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to participate in the START 2 Program:
1. Must be a Filipino citizen;
2. Must be eighteen (18) years old; If under the age of 18, a special consent must be secured from the parents and or legal guardian to allow the student to render part-time work;
3. Must be an undergraduate student of De La Salle University-Manila enrolled in at least nine (9) units or a graduate student enrolled in at least six (6) units during the term of employment;
4. Must not be enrolled in more than twelve (12) units for undergraduate students and not more than nine (9) units for graduate students;
5. Must not have any major offense;
6. Must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.500 at the time of application;
7. Must not have a failing grade in any course in the preceding term of enrollment;
8. Must have written consent from Parent On-Record (for students below 18 years old); and
9. Must be physically fit as evidenced by a Medical Certificate from a qualified physician.

Scholarship Requirements

Application Procedures:
1. Submit the following to the Office of Admissions and Scholarships (OAS):
-Accomplished START Application Form {} (two [2] original copies);
-Updated Resumé (two [2] original copies);
-Two 2 x 2 colored recent photos;
-Printed copy of grades of the previous terms from MyLasalle account;
-Certificate of Good Moral Character from the Discipline Office;
-Accomplished written consent form; and
-Medical Certificate from a qualified physician.
2. Upon determining that a student applicant is eligible as a STARTer and that all his/her requirements is already complete, OAS keeps applications/documents on active file while awaiting for requests for STARTer/s from partner companies.
3. As soon as the OAS Office receives the request for STARTer/s, OAS endorses the student applicant to partner company for employment screening the same way regular employees are screened by the partner company.
4. Partner company through OAS informs the student applicants and process the STARTers’ employment contract.

Company Request for Partnership:
1. Company writes letter of intent stating interest to be a partner company for the program to the OAS.
2. The DLSU representatives meet with partner company and discuss program details, areas of collaboration, and part-time student work program.
3. Partner company signs a Memorandum of Agreement with DLSU for an off-campus student employment program.

Company Request for STARTers:
1. Requesting partner company submits accomplished Personnel Requisition Form (PRF) to OAS.
2. The Program Coordinator looks from a pool of student applicants for possible assignment of STARTer/s to the requesting partner company.
