The Tau Alpha Overseas Scholarship Grant was established in 2002 by the Tau Alpha, a fraternity in UP.
Tau Alpha, The Argonauts, was founded in the University of the Philippines College of Engineering in the old campus in Manila on June 27, 1931. Originally named Mu Epsilon, Manila Engineers, Tau Alpha began to exist as a living organization the next year.
TAU ALPHA was founded at a time when the very concept of the fraternity system was just beginning to take root in the University of the Philippines. Founded in 1931 at the old Padre Faura campus, TAU ALPHA is the third oldest fraternity in UP.
The original name was “Mu Epsilon”, for “Manila Engineers”, with Angel de Jesus at the helm, since the brotherhood then was conceived to be exclusive to Manilans taking up engineering courses. A year later, realizing the fact that the objectives of the frat could be more easily attained by not confining its membership to a segment of the studentry, by which it was envisioned to serve in particular, the folds of the frat were opened for all UP male engineering students, and the name was changed to TAU ALPHA.
The name Tau Alpha comes from the band of heroes of Greek mythology who sailed forth in the frail Argo in search of the Golden Fleece under the able leadership of Jason.
