Scholarship Background

The Francisco J. Nicholas Scholarship is endowed by the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation, now under the tutelage of Loida Nicolas Lewis.

Loida Nicolas Lewis is Chair and CEO, TLC Beatrice, LLC, a family investment firm. An attorney by profession, admitted to practice in the Philippines and New York, Mrs. Lewis was the first Filipino woman to pass the New York bar without attending law school in the United States.

She is born and raised in Sorsogon City, Philippines. Mrs. Lewis graduated in the top 10% of her class from the University of the Philippines College of Law and a cum laude graduate of St. Theresa’s College, two of the Philippines’ premier educational institutions. She was a member of the UP Law Review Editorial Board and the UP Student Council.

After her ten years stint as General Attorney in the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (currently U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services) having won her discrimination case against INS in 1987, Mrs. Lewis co-authored “How to Get A Green Card”, now on its 8th edition, a best-seller in its genre.

She is one of the founders and the Chair Emeritus of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) an advocacy group in the United States. She is also one of the founders of Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund (AALDEF), and of the newly organized US Pinoys for Good Governance.

Scholarship Benefits

School fees as assessed but not to exceed P 6,500.00/semester;
Book allowance of P 1,500.00/semester;
Lodging allowance of P 2,500.00;
Food allowance of P 7.500.00.;
Transportation allowance maximum of P 3,000 every 10 months depending on the scholar’s home place or residence.

Scholarship Qualifications

An applicant for the grant must be a bona fide incoming freshman of the University of the Philippines from the Bicol Region, preferably Sorsogon (also: senior students graduating from any high school in the Bicol region, or senior students graduating from any high school but were born in the Bicol region);
if no one from the Bicol region qualifies, the scholarship must be open to other students;
must pursue any of the following fields: Agriculture (specializing in Agronomy, Animal Science, Agricultural Extension, Horticulture, Plant Pathology or Soil Science), Fisheries, Forestry, Library and Information Science, Nutrition, Social Work and Community Development;
must belong to STFAP Bracket 1-5 (Bracket D)
