Scholarship Background

Francisco F. Benitez (June 4, 1887-June 30, 1951) was an outstanding educator, author, editor, and the first dean of the School of Education of the University of the Philippines (UP).

He studied at the Philippine Normal College in 1904 and became one of the first pensionados sent to the United States in 1905. He attended the Western Illinois State Normal College in 1908. Benitez obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education (1910) and a Master of Arts (1914) from Columbia University. He received a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from the University of Manila in 1929 and a Doctor of Education (honoris causa) from the National University in 1951.

Benitez became the director of the Office of Private Education and Secretary of Public Instructions in 1946. Some of his published works include the Educatinal Progress in the Philippines and Studies of Great Filipinos. Benitez was the recipient of the “Teacher of Teachers Award” from President Elpidio Quirino in 1948 and the Teacher of the Year Award from the UP College of Education Alumni in 1950

The Francisco Benitez Scholarship was established in 1991.

Scholarship Benefits

P 7,500.00/semester

Benefits remitted every semester.

Scholarship Qualifications

1. Open to male freshman or sophomore B.S. Education students, but exception may be made in case of specially needy and meritorious students in junior or senior year with the following qualifications;
2. must be natural born citizens;
3. must have a weighted average of “2.50” or better in the semester immediately preceding the application;
4. must have no grade of “5.00” or “4.00” and have carried a normal load in the semester immediately preceding the application;
5. any grade of “inc.” must be removed on or before the last day for late registration of the following semester;
6. must come from a family whose parents’ annual gross income does not exceed P100,000;
7. must not have been the subject of any disciplinary action;
8. must not be enjoying any other scholarship or financial assistance.
