St. Scholastica’s College Manila Admission and Entrance Exam Basics

By:  Janina Denise Torralba

Despite being highly contested and controversial, the concepts of religion and women empowerment are both given importance in the Philippines. Taking these two concepts together and subsequently following the footsteps of other religious orders before them, the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing settled in the Philippines to establish what is known today as St. Scholastica’s College Manila.

For more than a century, SSC has been a pioneer Catholic college for girls. It offers a wide variety of programs, from the arts to the sciences, and it is proof that women are truly valuable and able-bodied members of our modern society.

SSC Introduction

St. Scholastica’s College was founded by the first five Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing in 1906 upon the request of Manila Archbishop Harty, the same Archbishop who spearheaded a separate Catholic college which would eventually be DLSU. From a small, windowless wagon in which the first batch of nearly sixty students was taught, the “Free School” eventually moved to its current site and was given government recognition.

The Second World War was a particularly difficult time for the college, but it bounced back from being seized by the Japanese and burning down after being ambushed. Since then, it has revolutionized its goals to focus on the education of women. Enrollment is exclusively for women, but the enrollment of male students has been allowed in the Cognate, Music, and Fine Arts programs.

St. Scholastica prides itself in having nurtured several alumnae who have been the first women in their fields—such as the first female president in the Philippines and Asia (the late Corazon Aquino), the first female Supreme Court Justice of the Philippines (the late Cecilia Muñoz-Palma), and the first female commercial pilot of the Philippines (Aurora Carandang)—as well as recognized and revered women in the performing arts.

SSC Admission Qualifications

To become eligible for admission into SSC, a student must fall under any of the following criteria:

  1. Filipino female graduates of DepEd-accredited high schools in the Philippines; or
  2. Foreign female graduates of high schools abroad.

Although St. Scholastica’s College is exclusively for women, male students are accepted in the Cognate, Fine Arts, and Music programs. Being a Catholic college, SSC prefers students of the Catholic faith.

SSC Application and Entrance Exam Schedule

SSC holds its entrance exams for the college level every Saturday at 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN, from the last week of August until the following May (prior to the applicant’s first academic year). Requirements must be submitted three days prior to the desired testing date. It is important to remember that admission into SSC is on a first-come, first-served basis.

SSC Provincial Testing Centers and Schedules

If you aren’t residing within Metro Manila, you may contact one of the schools under the Association of Benedictine Schools (ABS) for information about testing. Application begins in August, while the testing dates are to be made known through announcements. The complete list of ABS may be found at http://www.ssc.edu.ph/sscweb/other%20links/ABS.html. Note, however, that not all these schools will entertain inquiries about testing, especially if there are not enough applicants in a certain area. Contact the main campus directly for updated information.

Release of SSC Entrance Exam Results

The results for the SSC Entrance Exam are relayed by mail soon after the day of examination (containing a reply slip to confirm enrollment). They may also be viewed at the SSC website by entering the applicant’s birth date and the receipt number of the application and testing fee. Late applicants (around March and April) must call the Admissions Office two weeks after the examination. Some applicants may be required to undergo an interview on a certain future date.

SSC Entrance Exam Coverage and Feedback

The SSC Entrance Exam covers basic topics in core high school subjects (sans Science) and lasts for four hours. It is known to be very easy and needs mostly stock knowledge from your years in high school, but you can never go wrong with humble prayers (especially since SSC is a Catholic college).
