Massage Therapist Course & Career Info

Course Description:

I.          Description of Course

Students who aspire to become licensed Massage Therapists are required to undergo a course that provides at least 60 hours of training in various subjects such as General Anatomy and Physiology, General Pathology, Massage Therapy (Application and Practice), etc. Upon completion of the course, students are required to undergo a Licensure Examination provided by the Department of Health which consists of a Theoretical Written exam followed by a Practical Application exam. A passing rate of 75% is required for both examinations.

 

II.         Cost of Education

The tuition fee costs for Massage Therapy can vary from school to school, usually depending on the number of hours offered. Of course, only a few schools really just offer the required 60. Most massage therapy schools today offer 135 to 500 hour sessions and the entire course would usually cost anywhere between 10,000 to 15,000 excluding living expenses. There are also some schools which offer a Study Now, Pay Later program.

 

III.        Top Universities for Course

There are several schools that offer extensive training on Massage Therapy. One of the more popular ones is HIMAS or the Handspring Institute of Massage and Shiatsu. This institution claims to have achieved a 100% passing rate in the 2007 licensure examinations and has produced two topnotchers to date. Another top school is MEDS-SAN Training Center, one of the pioneers in the industry. MEDS-SAN offers students to further their education with Spa Business Courses and Staff Development Training.

 

Skills and Factors:

I.          Skills/Physical Attributes

To qualify for a degree and license in Massage Therapy, the applicant must have the following attributes:

-          High School Graduate/Graduate Equivalency Diploma

-          At least 18 years of age

-          At least 60 hours of training in a Board of Massage Therapy Accredited Institution

The Attributes necessary for the job include:

-          Extensive knowledge on Anatomy and bodily functions

-          Knowledge of various Massage Techniques

-          Good interpersonal skills

-          Physical Fitness; Strong arms and hands are recommended

-          Professional, amiable disposition

 

II.         Responsibilities

Massage therapists are expected to assess their customers and determine what type of treatment they would benefit from the most. Then, using appropriate massage techniques and equipment, they are expected to help customers be relieved of their stress and muscular pains and aches.

 

Career Outlook and Global Demand:

I.          Global Demand

There local and global demand for Massage Therapists is steadily increasing. In fact, a career in Massage Therapy is listed as one of the 50 Best Careers of 2011 on Yahoo! Finance. Also, as the number of spas and fitness centers increase locally, so too does the demand for Massage Therapists, especially now that the field is becoming more and more accepted by medical practitioners worldwide.

 

II.         Expected Salary

Massage Therapists who are employed in spas and fitness institutions are usually able to enjoy an average basic salary of more than php 10,000.00 monthly. Self-employed massage therapists can also earn considerably more than that as they can charge bigger rates for their clients and provide home service. The most common rate for massage therapists is P300/hour.

 

Salaries for those who are able to find a job abroad are considerably higher, though the amount varies from country to country. In the United States, the average salary of a massage therapist is said to range from $35,000 to $55,000 a year.

 

III.        Opportunities for Advancement

Massage Therapists are presented with a whole array of options after passing the licensure examination. They can choose to work at spas or fitness centers – an option that could provide them with a stable, reliable income. They can also work as a self-employed massage therapist, giving them command of their own schedule and rates. Both options are highly lucrative. What’s even more lucrative, though, is if the massage therapist can generate enough income to open his or her own massage or fitness center.
