In the span of five years, mechanical engineering students are taught about the principles of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, structural analysis, and materials science. After which, students are required to undergo a licensure examination provided by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

II.         Cost of Education

In public universities, an entire course in Mechanical engineering can cost just P38,000 at P3,800 per semester. However, in private universities and colleges, a course in mechanical engineering can cost as much as P495,000 in expensive schools and P295,000 in the less expensive ones.

III.        Top Universities for Course

Based on the passing rate for the PRC Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examinations, the top mechanical engineering school is Central Mindanao University. From 2008 to 2010, the Central Mindanao University has boasted of a 100% passing rate. At second place is the Batangas State University, with a passing rate of 98.20% from 2008 to 2010. As such, mechanical engineers can pretty much take their pick on what industry they want to work for.

II.         Expected Salary

The salary grade of a mechanical engineer usually depends on what industry he is working for. For example, a mechanical engineer who works in the electronics industry can get a basic salary of P16,500 upwards. Those working with plastic and other non-metals could get a basic salary of P21,500 upwards. Mechanical engineers working for the transportation industry sometimes get the choicest salaries, usually at P30,000 and above.

III.        Opportunities for Advancement

Mechanical engineers usually start out as apprentices as they branch out into specific fields. However, as they progress in their jobs, they can be promoted to a supervisory or managerial position, often handling apprentices themselves.
