One of the lessons I never forgot from my high school classes was the maxim “structure determines function.”  While my teacher referred to inventions at the time, the principle may apply to universities as well.

One such case is Mapua University, whose two-campus structure lends itself to some interesting choices during its application period.  Let’s take a closer look at it.

Mapua Background

While the university has a reputation as a technology-centered learning institution, tech-related courses aren’t the only courses that one may sign up for.  In fact, Mapua has two campus for the precise purpose of allowing students to choose their majors.

Those who wish to study engineering-related courses are advised to enroll in the Intramuros campus, while students who are interested in nursing, business or technology courses would do well to apply at the Makati campus.  In the latter case, business courses refer to the following:

  • Computer Science
  • Hotel and Restaurant Management
  • Information Technology
  • Business Administration
  • Accountancy
  • Entrepreneurship

Mapua Admission Requirements

Basically, Mapua officials will take a close look at applicants’ performance on the Mapua Scholastic Aptitude Examination (MSAE, aka the entrance test), the quotas of the applicants’ program of choice (along with its provisions) and the students’ academic performance during their senior year in high school.

Besides those qualifications, applicants must also present the following:  their application fee payment, a couple of identical 1½” x 1½” ID pictures with plain backgrounds and proof of their candidacy for graduation (i.e. a photcopy of their senior year high school report card, a certificate of good moral character, etc.) and the completed application form.

Mapua Enrolment Requirements

The general enrolment documents are as follows:

  • one long brown envelope
  • the original copy of their birth certificate printed on NSO (National Statistics Office) paper
  • a recently issued certificate of good moral character, accomplished and sealed by the applicants’ high school authorities
  • their Mapua exam permit, exam results letter or notice of results
  • three identical 1 ½” x 1 ½”ID pictures with plain backgrounds
  • the original copy of the students’ high school senior year report card (complete with the principal’s signature on the applicant’s eligibility for admission to college)
  • the complete Student Data Sheet or Enrolment Form (obtained from the Admissions Office or downloadable here)

Mapua Special Case Requirements

Applicants may have other requirements to submit depending on their status at the time of application.  For instance, Mapua high school graduates must present the original copy of their high school report card and a photocopy of written certification from their principal.  The certification should state that their Form 137-A has not been forwarded to any other school, and is still on file.

Valedictorians and salutatorians need to present certification of honors indicating the total number of graduates (provided they have graduated from accredited Philippine high schools with a minimum of sixty graduating students).  The certification must be signed by their high school principal and sealed with the school seal.

Filipino citizens who have studied abroad (with the exception of those under the DepEd) will be asked for a certificate of completion of their high school education (or its equivalent).

Foreign nationals have different paperwork to turn in depending on whether they are graduates from a high school in the Philippines or in another country.  Mapua will ask the former for their Special Study Permit or their ACR (Alien Certificate of Registration and the original copy and photocopy of their passport.

The latter simply need to present a certificate of high school completion and the items listed here.  Either way, it’s highly recommended for foreign students to check with the section chief-in-charge at the Registrar’s Office for additional information about requirements.

As an interesting side  note, applicants may defer enrollment for the succeeding terms until the third quarter, provided they fulfill two conditions:  one, they still possess their original high school credentials; two, they have valid reasons for doing so.

Mapua Application/Entrance Exam Schedule

The application period for 2011 started last July 19, 2010 and is still ongoing.  The specific schedule of entrance exams, however, largely depends on the campus in question.  Generally, exams take place between the months of August and March of the following year.

Students based in the Middle East may also take the entrance exam in selected testing centers.  Please go here for a listing of venues, time slots and dates.

Release of Mapua Entrance Exam Results

The university will mail the applicants’ examination results to them, complete with the relevant enrolment dates and the list of additional requirements they’ll need to submit.  Potential Mapua students may also check this webpage for results around a week after their exam.  If the results are not ready yet by that time, they may also call the campus to inquire (Please see the contact details below.).

General Mapua Exam Coverage and Feedback

The entrance test tends to focus on high school material that applicants’ have tackled before, namely Mathematics (Numerical Aptitude), Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), English (Verbal Aptitude) and Computers.  Further testing may be given to applicants depending on their course of choice.

The general consensus among test-takers is that the exam isn’t particularly difficult, so long as one had paid attention to one’s high school lessons.  They do caution newcomers not to take it lightly, though, as passing the exam and maintaining grades once they’re in are two different things.
