CEU Application and Entrance Exam Basics

When I was in high school, one of the most important lessons I learned was that of delegating tasks.  With the 1001 things we had to do everyday, it made sense to assign certain group tasks to individuals who were best able to accomplish them.

You may be pleased to know that universities also “delegate”, though the public sees this more with courses more than anything else.  Case in point:  Centro Escolar University, more commonly referred to as CEU.

CEU Background

Most colleges with several campuses usually allot certain courses to specific branches.  CEU sort of follows that system.  I say “sort of” because there are courses that may be found in more than one campus.

The institution’s Manila campus takes the cake in terms of sheer course availability and completeness.  Some of its programs may also be found in the two Makati branches, Gil Puyat and Legazpi.  The former gets the more medicine-related courses such as dentistry and pharmacy, while the latter gets more of the non-Science related ones.

CEU Admission Requirements

The necessary paperwork is as follows:

  • the completed application form
  • two to five 1 ½ x 1 ½ ID pictures (black and white or colored)
  • original copy of form 138 (high school report card)
  • certificate of good moral character (from the applicants’ high school principal)
  • the original copy and a photocopy of the applicants’ NSO birth certificate
  • pencils and ball pens for the exam

Please note that certain courses have special requirements for applicants.

Course Special Requirements
B.S. Accounting 85% minimum senior year general weighted average (GWA)
Dentistry Certificate of Eligibility
B.S. Nursing
  • females must be at least 5′ in height, males at least 5’2″
  • senior year GWA at least 82%
  • no final grade lower than 80%

International and transfer students also have a special set of requirements and a somewhat different application process, as detailed here and here, respectively:

CEU Admission Process

The admission process is basically the same across all CEU campuses, with the main difference being that of test scheduling (more on that later).  There are some minor variations between campuses, though.

The basic process is as follows:  obtain the application form from the school’s Recruitment and Placement Department.  Fill it up, attach the ID pictures and submit them to the Counseling and Testing Department (CTD).  Pay the 396-peso entrance fee at the Cashier’s Office and take the receipt back to the CTD.

Depending on which campus you visit, you may be asked to submit the form first and then pay the fee (Manila), or submit the form and the receipt together to the CTD (Makati).  Also note that different campuses need different amounts of ID pictures( five for Mendiola, four for Malolos and two for Makati).  Finally, all Makati applications are processed at the Gil Puyat campus.

The Department will inform applicants of the scheduled date and time of their exam.  Assuming they pass the exam, applicants will go for a face-to-face interview.  Those who pass the interview may present the remaining admission documents and sign the Student’s Pledge.

CEU Application/Entrance Exam Schedule

The Manila campus has an interesting registration and exam schedule that varies depending on the month in question.  The test falls on every second and fourth Saturday during August and September.  The times are as follows:

Registration Time Exam Time
7:30 a.m. – 7:55 a.m. 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
9:30 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 nn
12:30 p.m. -12:55 p.m. 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
2:30 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The schedule gets a bit more relaxed from October onwards—applicants may go for tests every day except Sunday.  Note that the time slots above still apply during these months.

On the other hand, the Makati campus has its registration and its tests on Saturdays.  Registration is from 8:00 a.m. to 8:55 a.m., while testing is from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Please note that these take place during the months of August and September.  From October to May of the following year, the branch relegates testing to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, though the time slots remain the same.

CEU Provincial Application/Testing Process

The Malolos application and testing schedule follows the Manila campus’ schedule, so kindly refer to the details above.

Release of CEU Entrance Exam Results

CEU has one of the fastest (if not the fastest) exam results releases I have ever encountered.  After taking the test, applicants will be asked to wait a little while the exam papers are checked.  They will then be summoned for the dissemination of results and an interview within the day (or by the following day, if the test was taken in the afternoon).  Exceptions to this same-day rule may exist for certain courses, though.

General CEU Exam Coverage and Feedback

Applicants who have taken CEU’s exam claim that it isn’t particularly difficult or easy.  It does requires good stock knowledge of major high school subjects (English, Math and Science), which means that anyone who had paid attention in class should do just fine.

The test also includes a Logical Reasoning section to round out all the subjects and to provide a bit of variety.  This is supposedly a tad more challenging than the other sections, yet it still isn’t terribly difficult.

As with other schools, the true challenge of CEU may come long after the initial screening process is over.
