Philippine College Scholarships: SM Colleges Scholarship Program

(Source: The SM College Scholarship Guidelines School Year 2011-2012)

The scholarship is limited to public high school graduates hailing from:

  • The National Capital Region (NCR)
  • Laguna
  • Batangas
  • Pampanga
  • Benguet
  • Pangasinan
  • Bulacan
  • Quezon
  • Camarines Sur
  • Rizal
  • Cavite

  • Misamis Oriental
  • Davao del Sur
  • Negros Occidental
  • Iloilo

The combined income of the working family members in their household must be no more than PhP 150,000 a year.

In terms of grades, their fourth-year weighted average grade should be at least 88% in the second or third grading period.

Application Procedure:

  1. Go to the Customer Service Counter of the SM mall near you to get a copy of the Application Form.
  2. Completely fill out the Application Form. See a copy of last year’s application form (Do NOT use this form; it’s outdated and is provided here only to give you an example of what information the application form will require).
  3. Attach to the fully accomplished SM College Scholarship Application Form the following documents:
  • A photocopy of your F138 or your 4th year High School Report Card with the Second or Third Grading period’s weighted average
  • If it’s available, a photocopy of the Certificate showing that you passed the college entrance exam of the college or university of your choice
  • A photocopy of the latest Income Tax Return of the income-earning members of your household;
  • If one or more income-earning household members are exempt from filing income tax return, the exempt household member’s/members’ Certificate of Non-Filing of Income
  1. Submit the fully accomplished SM College Scholarship Application Form (complete with all applicable attachments) to the SM Customer Service Counter on or before the deadline.

Deadline of Application

For the 2012-2013 intake year, the application deadline is on December 20, 2011.

What Happens After Application Form Submission

The scholarship committee will review and screen college scholarship applications. Qualified applicants will be told through a Telephone Call or through an SMS (i.e. text message) about their Interview Schedule and IQ Test Schedule.

For last year’s scholarship application, the interview and IQ test were administered from  January – March 2011.

Important Note

In case you’re wondering, the SM Foundation has no entrance exam for you to pass — that’s the job of the university you wish to attend.

Scholarship Privileges and Obligations

(Note: This section may be slightly outdated, but it should still help if you need general info on the SM College Scholarship Benefits.)

Basically, the SM Foundation will cover the scholars’ school-related expenses—allowances, transportation fees, school materials and tuition. It will also host different annual and monthly activities for the scholars to enjoy. Some of these include:

  • counseling sessions (on an individual basis)
  • programs promoting value formation
  • sessions geared toward spiritual renewal and emotional/moral support
  • SM department store jobs during summer and Christmas time

There’s no such thing as a free lunch/scholarship, so scholars will need to “pay” for the right to enjoy their privileges in two main ways. One important factor involves earning a minimum weighted grade average of 80% or its equivalent and having no failing grade in any subject. The presence of a single unacceptable grade may result in the scholar being placed on probation for a term.

The second major consideration involves keeping communication lines open between the scholar and the Scholarship Program Director. This is done in a number of ways:

  • Receiving certification from the Director—certification which the scholar will present to the college of choice upon enrolling
  • Turning the registration card in to the Director’s Office for payment processing
  • Reporting to the Director in person every month for the purpose of paying the student’s monthly expenses
  • Reporting one’s grades to the Director a couple of weeks after the semester’s final exams.
