Philippine College Scholarships: Megaworld Foundation Scholarship Program

A former mentor of mine said that one of the traits of truly successful people is the desire to give something back to the community that helped them become successful in the first place. Perhaps that is the rationale behind the Megaworld Foundation’s Scholarship Program.

As the socio-civic arm of the Megaworld Corporation, the foundation has set aside two ways of providing financial assistance to deserving students. Let’s take a closer look at its regular scholarship and its leadership grant.

Scholarship Details

1. Background Info: The Megaworld Foundation’s regular scholarship deals more with training students of specific courses (please see below), while its leadership grant has the added focus of developing students for the leadership positions of tomorrow.

2. Needed Documents: The two grants share some similar document requirements, though certain exclusive things exist for either one:

• Five ID photos: two 1 x 1s, two 2 x 2s and (for the regular scholarship only) one photo with the applicants’ guardian or family
• Birth certificate (certified by the NSO)
• Medical certificate complete with the license number of the attending physician
• BIR certification for tax exemption for guardian or for both parents, plus Income Tax Return or affidavit (regular scholarship only)
• NBI or police clearance (regular scholarship only)
• Barangay clearance proving the lack of a derogatory record on the part of the applicant (regular scholarship only)
• Certificate of enrolment or letter of admission (regular scholarship only)
• Certification of the applicant’s leadership position in any organization (leadership grant only)
• University recommendation letter (leadership grant only)
• Certificate of good moral character from the schools the applicants’ have attended (leadership grant only)
• Resume (leadership grant only)
• Grade reports all the way up to the current semester (leadership grant only)

3. Qualifications: The foundation will also assess applicants based on several criteria. For the regular scholarship, some of these will vary depending on whether they’re still incoming freshmen or already college level applicants:

Incoming freshmen applying for the regular scholarship must belong to the upper ten percent of their graduating batch. They also need to pass the entrance test of the university they’re interested in attending.

College level applicants need to take the full load prescribed for their course of choice. This must be indicated in the class schedule, course curriculum or enrolment assessment form. Understandably, they also need to complete their courses entire curriculum.

Regular scholarship or leadership grant applicants must have no failing grade, and their grade point average should be at 85% at the very least. Finally, the combined gross yearly income of their family must be at 300,000 pesos or less, regardless of which grant they actually go for.

4. Application Procedure: Simply obtain a foundation application form from the Megaworld Corporation Human Resources Department, fill it up completely and submit it to the people of the same department.

Applicants will also undergo screening in the form of IQ tests, psychological tests and interviews, the schedules of which will be determined by the Head Office. A committee will come up with the final list of scholars based on the applicants’ academic competence, intellectual capabilities, financial need and established sense of service to their school and community.

Scholar Privileges and Obligations

The foundation will pay for scholars’ tuition fees and other miscellaneous, school-related fees. It will also provide book allowances and monthly stipends for them. These students may renew their scholarships every year (up to five years) as long as they continue to make the cut.

In return, the foundation will ask scholars to maintain their full academic workload from semester to semester. If the scholars do well enough, Megaworld Corporation may very well hire them after they graduate.

Miscellaneous Information

Both grants have certain limitations, however. For one thing, they only apply to the following courses:

• Legal courses
• Business courses
• Finance courses
• Accountacy
• Interior design
• Information technology
• Architecture
• Engineering

What’s more, students can only apply for these grants with respect to accredited schools. For the leadership grant, they only have two universities to choose from: Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines Diliman. The regular scholarship offers more options, however:

• U.P. Diliman
• University of the East Manila
• University of Santo Tomas
• Technological University of the Philippines
• Polytechnic University of the Philippines
• Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
• Mapua Institute of Technology
• Lyceum of the Philippines
• Far Eastern University
• FEU – East Asia College
• Adamson University

Scholars who wish to shift courses or drop subjects must first seek the approval of the Megaworld Foundation Committee as well as the approval of their university’s officials. Neither grant will cover increased academic workloads due to subject withdrawals or changes in courses.
