There are times when you really want to attend a certain university but you’re strapped for cash. What do you do during times like these? Why, you apply for a scholarship, of course! Fortunately, all learning institutions out there offer financial aid of one type or another.
For example, you may be interested to know that the University of the Philippines has one such scholarship named after a certain famous statue standing on its grounds. Let’s take a look at the nitty-gritty of Oblation Scholarship.
The Details, in a Nutshell
1. Background: The U.P. Oblation scholarship is generally awarded to the best UPCAT qualifiers out there. Note, however, that these eligible students still need to meet the other requirements of their chosen course.
2. School: This scholarship only applies to the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines.
3. Number of Slots: This scholarship will only be granted to fifty fortunate students per school year. By “fortunate,” I’m referring to the Top Fifty incoming freshmen in terms of UPCAT performance.
4. Application Process: Simply file your UPCAT application as you normally would. Your UPCAT ranking will determine whether you’ll get to enjoy this scholarship or not, anyway.
5. Deadlines: The U.P. Diliman Office of Admissions will begin accepting applications during the months of June and July every year. The deadline falls somewhere during the month of July for a very good reason, as you will see next.
6. Testing Info/Dates: The UPCAT for school year 2010-2011 was held last August 1-2. The exam is usually held on the first week of August every year (though not always on the first two days of the year).
7. Requirements/Documents: All the usual UPCAT requirements apply: the completed U.P. forms 1 and 2, the Permanent Secondary School Record (duly signed, certified and photocopied), four identical and recent 2 x 2 mug shots and the application fee (which may be 450 pesos, $50 or $100 depending on your nationality and place of residence).
A Packaged Deal
“With great power, comes great responsibility,” so sayeth Ben Parker. Likewise, the Oblation Scholarship is a packaged deal of obligations and privileges.
Besides taking on your program’s normal academic workload, you’ll be asked to pass each and every subject with at least a grade of 2.00—no dropping classes or getting “incomplete” standings here, folks.
On the flip side, you can enjoy such benefits as waiving all school fees (except for the student fund), a book allowance of 2,250 pesos per semester, a 3,000 monthly stipend and a STFAP-patterned transportation allowance for all your troubles.
INTARMED students take note: this scholarship only covers the first for four years of your program. Furthermore, your grade computation for your third and fourth years will depend upon your marks for the entire year.
Finally, expect the powers that be to announce the finalized list of U.P. Oblation scholars by January or February of the following year.
Personal Contact
Sometimes it’s better to get the news straight from the horse’s mouth. If there’s something you’d like to clarify about the Oblation Scholarship and you need to communicate with a living, breathing human being, feel free to drop by the scholarship office at Vinzon’s Hall, U.P. Diliman campus.
Alternatively, you may also reach them via phone or fax at (02) 928-7228. Doctor Bella M. Villanueva is the project coordinator for this scholarship program, and you may e-mail her at .

uhm, is the scholarship really exclusive for the Diliman campus? I know some people who were granted this scholarship yet went to UPM.
